COSTA RICA PROVINCES OF LIMON on the CARIBBEAN COAST
Limon has 130 miles of Caribbean beaches, and an Afro-Caribbean lifestyle. "Barra del Colorado offers world-class tarpon and snook fishing. The beach at Tortuguero National park is the most important nesting site in the western Caribbean for the green sea turtle. Cahuita National Park and Manzanillo provide excellent scuba diving throughout the year. Surfers love the Caribbean coast, whose waves have been quite a challenge to surf.
It was in the region of Isla Uvita that Christopher Columbus stepped off his boat in 1502 and on seeing the stunning landscapes that stretched out before him, named the country 'Costa Rica' (Rich Coast).
The atmosphere and the culture are its prime assets. Almost half the inhabitants in this region are Afro-Caribbean, (Jamaican ancestry), which is most seen in the typical food like jerk chicken and curried fish. In Limón the traditional folk music are the cool beats of reggae, calypso and soca. The weather is hot and humid throughout the year as the region does not have a dry season. Limón's principal language is not just Spanish but a English Creole.
In Limón you can enjoy the richness of the land, the beaches, endless sports including horseriding, kayaking and sport fishing, and numerous national parks and nature reserves such as, Braulio Carrillo National Park, Cahuita National Park and International La Amistad.
